Boarding Facilities

Our new boarding houses are located right in the heart of the College campus, which means you have direct after-hours access to sports facilities, the library, computer suites, music practice facilities and art rooms. Our location close to Northlands Mall and central Christchurch also provides plenty of options for organised social outings to the movies, restaurants and the like.

New Boarding Complex Opens

Prime Minister, John Key, officially opened the new boarding complex on 4 April 2013.

Students returned to the College in January after spending almost two years in motels following the February 2011 earthquake which caused two of their three boarding houses to be demolished.

St Andrew’s College seized the opportunity to develop a new boarding complex that would house 120 of their 163 boarders with the other 43 boarders accommodated in the remaining boarding house.

The new boarding complex, designed by Wilkie and Bruce Architects, is built to 100% of the new building code, using the latest engineering technology. Significant ground remediation work, comprising of 660 stone columns, six metres deep, overlain by a deep gravel raft and concrete slab foundation has taken place.

General Manager David Evans says, “Safety for our students and staff was paramount when considering this project, however protection of the asset was also important. The total team effort between our architects and our contractors Mainzeal has been amazing and they have met some very challenging deadlines that have allowed us to be open within 13 months of starting construction.”

The cost of the two new boarding houses, which separately house boys and girls, was $15.2m with a further $2.2m spent refurbishing and strengthening the junior boys’ boarding house.

The new complex is designed to have a natural indoor/outdoor flow with striking landscaping, lawns and courtyards for casual gatherings. The interior is light and contemporary with practical bedroom design that is not only spacious but also has attractive furnishings, including built in desks, pin boards and storage. Every floor has a day lounge, complete with TV and balcony where students can relax and socialise. A TV room on each ground floor offers a friendly space for smaller gatherings.

Chapel Update

Chapel Bridge SM

The College is ready to embark on rebuilding its Chapel which was badly damaged in the 2011 earthquakes. The Chapel is a significant facility that services the large St Andrew’s community which has a strong emotional connection to the present building. After a robust consultation process the decision has been made to deconstruct the existing Chapel and build a larger Chapel able to meet the College’s future needs.
