StAC Band Takes Top Honours in Canterbury Rockquest Finals
1 Jul 2009 -
St Andrew’s own kings of rock, the four-piece Skatelly Kat Gang, stormed the stage at the Canterbury finals of the annual Smokefree Rockquest last month, taking out top honours and booking themselves a place in the national finals of the event.
The group, comprising Andy Manning (lead vocals), Harry Guy (drums), Brad Guy (guitar) and Finn Brown (bass), beat 27 other bands from schools throughout Canterbury into first place in the highly prestigious event, which has launched the career of many well-known New Zealand bands and solo musicians.
Band leader Andy Manning told The Press newspaper that he could hardly believe their win. “It’s still sinking in,” he said. “It’s the greatest thrill.
“The best thing for me about tonight was the moment on stage when the music takes you over,” he added. “It is just ecstasy, it’s just what everything should be like!”
A Skatelly Kat Gang song also took out the much-valued Best Song accolade at the event. “And we don’t even have a title for it yet,” says Andy. “It’s just called ‘First Song’. We’ll have to think of a name for it.”
