Volleyball

Poirewa

Volleyball is a fun, social, physical game, which is growing rapidly at St Andrew’s College. Beach volleyball is also part of the programme, and these exciting summer team sports are open for both males and female players of all levels.

Volleyball is played in Terms 1 and 4, competing in after-school and evening competitions on Mondays. Beach Volleyball is played on Friday afternoons.

We hold trials early in the year, or groups of classmates and friends can get their own team together and enter the Monday after school competition.

Most of our new Year 9 Volleyball players spend Term 1 training only, building their skills to become part of the Term 4 competition.

Players selected into competitive League volleyball teams in Term 1 will attend the Canterbury and South Island Tournaments (seniors in Term 1, and juniors in Term 4). Our senior teams also attend the Nationals, which are held in Palmerston North each March. We usually send one boys’ team and one girls’ team to the Nationals, however in the past we have had up to three teams entered.

Volleyball is a great sport to take up at Secondary School level, as it can lead to many opportunities to play both in New Zealand and overseas. Both indoor and beach volleyball and growing sports internationally.

Facilities

We are fortunate to have two gymnasiums at St Andrew’s College, which are utilised for volleyball trainings and competitions. We are committed to growing volleyball and have a large number of coaches from both within, and outside the school.

Successes

Our Girls’ volleyball team finished first at the 2019 South Island Secondary School Beach Volleyball Championships, and our Senior Girls' beach volleyball team were runners up at the NZSS Beach Volleyball.
