Sports Selection Policy, Sports Contract and Code of Conduct

Sports Selection Policy

St Andrew’s College has adopted a Sports Selection Policy that provides a basis for selection decisions across all College sporting codes.

The key points of the Sports Selection Policy are outlined below. All Coaches and Managers have been provided with the policy and if any other stakeholder has any further questions, please contact Director of Sport, Mark Lane, on MLA@stac.school.nz.

When selecting our players we endeavour to:

  • include clear objectives, assessment criteria and process;
  • run a fair and objective, organised process that gives equal opportunity to all;
  • communicate effectively with everyone involved;
  • gather information over a longer timeframe;
  • give special consideration to the deselection process and how it is handled;
  • incorporate weekly selection that includes off-field aspects;
  • have our Teacher in Charge of sport oversee the selection process at all levels ensuring the College policy is adhered to.

Sports Contract

Students representing St Andrew’s College in sports activities are encouraged to strive for excellence in presentation, preparation, and performance so that the team and the individual become the best they can be.

St Andrew's College Students:
  1. Play hard but fair.
  2. Play by the rules of the game.
  3. Be committed to your team. Attend all practices and matches.
  4. Never argue with the referee. Control your emotions, display a positive attitude.
  5. Respect the authority of the coach and manager.
  6. Be a good sport. Acknowledge all good play whether by your team or your opponent.
  7. Use appropriate and acceptable language.
  8. Always wear the full and correct sports uniform.
  9. Always act in a manner that brings credit to yourself, the team, and the College.
  10. Respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background, or religion.

Sports Code of Conduct – Spectator / Parent

  1. Applaud the performance of both teams.
  2. Be positive with the officials and acknowledge their efforts.
  3. Let players play their game, not your game.
  4. Praise efforts, not results.
  5. Set an example to the players.
  6. No spectators/parents on the field at any time.
  7. Use appropriate and acceptable language.
  8. Spectators/parents are not to approach a College coach prior to and during the game. They have a role to carry out.
  9. Concerns regarding the game can be discussed with the team manager or staff member in charge of the sport in the first instance.
  10. It is only a game, and this perspective needs to also be taught to our children.
