Cricket

Kirikiti

The vision of our popular cricket programme is to create an environment of respect and enjoyment that develops a better person and enriches them through playing cricket.

We cater for cricketers in all age groups, from Preparatory School teams through to under age teams in Year 9 and Year 10, along with our Colts, First, Second and Third XI teams. Our boys’ teams play in Saturday competitions, while girls are able to play for a club side on a Saturday.

St Andrew’s College cricket teams are regularly at the top in inter-school competitions, with both our First and Second XI teams winning numerous One and Two Day titles over the last few years.

Our coaching philosophy is to create an enjoyable environment in which our athletes work hard, train smart, play fair and have fun. Players are expected to maintain standards of conduct aligning with our College values, both on and off the field.

We are proud to have some of the best facilities of any school in Christchurch, with top quality grass wickets, and excellent artificial facilities.

Development of younger players is a key focus of the cricket programme. We put a lot of resources into our Year 9 teams to give them the tools to develop their talents, and provide a clear pathway towards the First XI.

The High Performance Sport programme provides our top cricketers with some exciting opportunities, particularly in terms of skill development.

The St Andrew’s College First XI tours Sydney every second year and plays in a Quadrangular Tournament each year against Scot’s College (Wellington), Geelong School (Melbourne), and Scotch College (Adelaide). The Year 10 team goes to Melbourne each year to compete in the World Schools’ Cricket Challenge.

St Andrew’s has produced several international players throughout its history, with 16 Old Collegians involved in first class cricket, and seven playing for the New Zealand Under 19 team.

Our latest internationals are Black Cap Henry Nicholls (OC 2009); and Peter Borren (OC 2001) and Logan Van Beek (OC 2008), who both played for the Netherlands.

Our most prominent cricketing Old Collegian is Graham Dowling (OC 1957), a New Zealand test player from 1961–1972, who scored his first ever century playing for the St Andrew’s Under 14s versus Christ’s College in 1951, and still has the bat he was given by the College to remember his innings.

Successes

In 2021, our First XI were announced as the winner of the Gillette Cup Regional Final.

Our First XI enjoyed strong success in 2019, winning the New Zealand Gillette Cup for the first time in the College's history. Our Primary Girls' team also placed second at the Canterbury Regional Tournament.
