Cycling

Cycling takes place on a Wednesday at Tai Tapu, where rides include time trials, hill climbs and scratch races.

Cycling at St Andrew’s involves mountain biking in the summer months and road cycling in the winter months. During Term 1 students can participate in a five-race cross-country series based at the Halswell Quarry. There are also various downhill and enduro events run by local clubs at various venues in the Port Hills. In Term 2 and Term 3 the road racing programme is based at Tai Tapu on Wednesday afternoons. This includes time trials, scratch races and hill climbs. Events are open to all age groups and abilities, as the races are graded on ability, not age, enabling students to race against people of equal ability and experience.

In addition to regular local events, StAC Cycling also enters riders in Canterbury, South Island and National championship events in all disciplines. These events are run by outside organisations.

StAC Cycling offers excellent support, assisting each rider as needed. There are opportunities for high performing athletes to be involved in our Elite Sports and High Performance programmes, where students get advice on all aspects of their sports performance. Individual coaching is usually arranged through third party coaches.

Being involved in cycling is great for aerobic fitness and allows students who are involved in other sports to maintain or build their fitness in the off-season. StAC cycling has a philosophy that all levels will be catered for and competition is encouraged in races but not compulsory.

Students will need to provide their own bike and all associated safety equipment such as helmets, bike lights and good visibility. The club will assist in the cost of entering events and races. Cycling kit can either be purchased from the school or loaned for the season at a reduced cost.
