Trapshooting

Trapshooting is a winter sport which students participate in throughout Terms 2 and 3.

Although previous experience is not absolutely necessary, students who have shot before will be given preference. Membership is through invitation, as we can only cater for limited numbers. Practices are held at the Canterbury Clay Target Club at McLeans Island on Wednesdays after school.

Our trapshooters compete at various competitions throughout the year, including inter-school competitions, the Canterbury Secondary Schools Circuit Competition (held on Sundays), the annual New Zealand Inter-School Postal Shoot, the South Island Secondary School Championships, the North Island Secondary School Championships, and the National Secondary School Championships.

The team’s current coach, Mr Warren Wright, has been involved with trapshooting at St Andrew’s College since 2005. He is a member of the Secondary School Sub Committee on the National Association and organises the Canterbury Secondary School Circuit Competition. In addition to his coaching and support of the St Andrew’s College students, Warren also manages many of the guns and stores the ammunition.

Our trapshooters show a high level of commitment, and consistently achieve good individual and team performances in local, regional and national competitions.

In 2016, an outstanding, near perfect shoot, saw our Senior team become New Zealand Secondary Schools Team Champions. They also won the North Island title and finished second at the South Island event. One of the team members, Jimmy Field (OC 2016) won the New Zealand Single Rise Championship.
