Athletics
New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics National Championships
In December, 11 talented athletes represented St Andrew’s at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics National Track and Field and Road Race Championships in Hastings. Highlights included:
Jody McCarthy-Dempsey (Y13): gold Senior Girls 100 hurdles, bronze Senior Girls high jump;
Maiyah Martin (Y9): silver Junior Girls 300 hurdles (personal best);
Orla Motley (Y13): silver Senior Girls hammer, sixth Senior Girls javelin;
Melenaite (Tia) Havea (Y12): bronze Senior Girls discus, fifth in Senior Girls shot put;
McCarthy-Dempsey (Y13), Sophie Paterson, Samuel Hardy and George Suter (all Y11): bronze in the Mixed Senior 4×100m relay;
Tayla Ford (Y9): fourth Year 9 Girls 3000m, seventh Junior Girls 400m;
Samuel Hardy, George Suter, Kupa Rule (Y12) and Cohnor Walsh (Y12): seventh Senior Boys 4×400m relay;
Cohnor Walsh (Y12): ninth Senior Boys 6000m in a field of more than 70 competitors.
Jody McCarthy-Dempsey and Orla Motley were both named in the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ team.
Years 4–8 Athletic Sports Day
The Preparatory School held its annual Athletic Sports Day in ideal weather, with students competing enthusiastically throughout the day. The event concluded with exciting class relays. Age group champions were:

ISSA Zone Athletics
On Tuesday, 11 November, 60 students from St Andrew’s competed at the ISSA Zones Athletics event held at Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub. Qualifying for ISSA Zones is already a commendable achievement, as students must place in the top two at our School Athletics Day to earn selection.
Our athletes performed exceptionally well, resulting in 28 qualifications for the Canterbury Primary Schools' Athletics Championships. The following students placed first in their events:
Year 5: Francesca Greer – first long jump and 80m, Geneva Walker – first 60m, Thomas Franks – first discus and shot put, Theo Nelson, first 800m;
Year 6: Samuel Carline – first high jump, Charlie Donkers – first 800m, Ming Macarthy – first 800m;
Year 7: Sophie Jacobs – first high jump;
Year 8: Willa Rahman – first high jump, Diesel Mackie – first 1500m, Patrick Smith – first 60m.
CPSSA Athletics
A group of 20 Preparatory School athletes delivered outstanding performances at the CPSSA Athletics at Ngā Puna Wai, showing determination in hot and windy conditions. Those to reach the podium were:
Thomas Franks (Y5): Canterbury champion in shot put (10.20m);
Joshua Smith (Y8): tied for third in high jump, clearing 1.45m;
Diesel Mackie (Y8): second in Year 8 Boys 1500m.
Basketball
A group of Year 9–10 students represented St Andrew’s at the NZSS South Island 3×3 Basketball Tournament in Rolleston. The Junior Boys’ Blue team finished second, while the Junior Boys’ White and Junior Girls’ teams both placed fifth.
Canoe Polo
Maya White (Y10), Mila Lovelock, Nate Randall and Maxim Taylor (all Y9) were part of combined Christchurch schools’ teams competing in the National Junior Canoe Polo Championship in Hastings, with the Junior Girls’ team placing third and the Junior Open team winning the Open B Grade title.
St Andrew’s teams performed well in the Canterbury Schools' Term 4 Canoe Polo competition at Lake Rua, with the A Grade team beating Shirley Boys’ High School 4–2 to retain the A Grade title, and St Andrew’s B Grade and C Grade teams both finishing in third place.
Cheerleading
Kora Graham (Y3) and her Empire Athletics’ Opal cheerleading team achieved third place in their division at the Garden City Championships.
The team also won second place with a virtual entry at the New Zealand Super Nationals.
Cricket
Aarkin Kesar (Y13), Ryan Bond, Spencer Hair and Hugo Fairweather-Logie (all Y12) were selected for the Canterbury Metro Years 11–12 teams.
Felix O’Byrne and Toby Lang (both Y10) were selected for the Years 9–10 Metro cricket team to play at a tournament in Timaru, along with Lucas Jemmett (Y10) for Mid Canterbury and Angus Schmack (Y10) for Canterbury Country.
Harriet Geare (Y10) was selected for the Canterbury Years 9–10 team.
Equestrian
Millie Rosewarne (Y7) competed at the John Jones Steel FEI South Island Three Day Event Championships held at McLeans Island. At just 11 years old, Millie was the youngest in her U21 category and finished ninth out of 35 competitors, just four points behind first place.
Flag Football
The Preparatory School NFL flag football team finished an impressive sixth place at the 2025 NFL Flag Football National Championships, among more than 70 teams nationwide. After placing runners-up at the Canterbury Regionals, the team carried that momentum into Nationals, securing two wins and two narrow losses, including a one-touchdown defeat to eventual champions Hutt Intermediate. Indi Haydon-Uren (Y7) was recognised as one of the standout players of the tournament for her all-round performance.
Olivia Quane (Y9) was named in the U15 Women’s Canterbury flag football team and Levi Currie (Y9) in the Canterbury Men’s U15 flag football team.
Gymnastics
ChloeAnn Botha (Y7) competed at the XP Gymnastics Nationals in Auckland, achieving a proficiency score of 52.133.
Kart Racing
Louis Smith (Y10) wrapped up his karting season after four months competing against the top racers in his age group and kart class across the North Island and nationally. Louis finished fifth overall in the series.
Netball
Charlotte Galvan (Y12) was selected for the Netball New Zealand National Development Squad.
Polo
At the South Island SUPA Interschool Polo Tournament, St Andrew’s College was well represented in combined Christchurch school teams. Results:
A Grade: Wilde Brabazon-Fleming (Y10) second with Christchurch Combined A;
B Grade: Sofia Sneddon (Y8) first with Christchurch Combined C and B Grade MVP;
C Grade: Harry Brennan and Billy Forsyth (both Y11) first with Christchurch Combined D. Billy Forsyth C Grade MVP.
Rugby Sevens
St Andrew’s Senior and Junior Girls’ sevens teams travelled to Geraldine to compete in the South Island Secondary Schools’ Tournament, where the Senior team finished third, after a losing a dramatic semi-final against St Hilda’s Collegiate. The Junior team made the final and finished second. The Junior team, featuring dedicated Year 9–10 players, performed well at the Crusaders 7s tournament in Christchurch, before attending the national Condors 7s championship in Tauranga, where they faced strong opposition and finished an impressive 11th out of 21 teams around the country. Several players earned selection into Canterbury representative sides.
Special Olympics
William McKerchar (Y10) represented North Canterbury at the Special Olympics 2025 National Summer Games, where he won two silver medals in backstroke and relay, and a bronze medal in the 100m freestyle.
Swimming
Liam Botha (Y4) competed at the Swimming Canterbury West Coast Junior Championships in the Boys’ Aged 10 and Under events, winning the 100m butterfly and 200m backstroke, and finishing second in the 100m individual medley, 50m butterfly and 200m individual medley.
Tennis
St Andrew’s tennis players competed in the Years 9–10 Canterbury Schools’ Tennis Championships at Wilding Park, with some excellent results. Title winners were:
Year 9 Girls Singles (A Grade): Zoe Kelso;
Year 9 Girls Doubles (A Grade): Zoe Kelso and Sabine Waghorn;
Year 9 Boys Singles (A Grade): Tom Dawson;
Year 10 Boys Singles (A Grade): George Kotepong;
Year 10 Boys Doubles (A Grade): George Kotepong and Tom Dawson (Y9).
At the Tennis New Zealand 14 and Under Junior Championships, Zoe Kelso (Y9) achieved an outstanding result in the doubles competition, reaching the semi-final and finishing third overall. She placed 10th in the singles nationally.
Frank McHarg (Y8) won both the singles and doubles titles at the Canterbury Primary Schools’ Tennis Tournament, making a strong comeback from a year out due to injury.
Touch
In mid-December, the mixed touch team competed at the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Touch Championship. The team opened strongly with two convincing wins, while the third game was cancelled due to lightning and recorded as a draw. They finished pool play unbeaten and advanced as the top seed into the top‑16 crossover round, where they remained undefeated. A draw against eventual finalists, Whanganui High School, placed them second in the group on points differential.
This set up a quarter‑final against Mount Albert Grammar School, where the team experienced its first loss of the tournament. Undeterred, they fought hard in their remaining matches, both of which were extremely close contests and reflective of the high standard among the top eight teams in New Zealand. The team finished seventh overall, a fantastic achievement in a fiercely competitive field.
At the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Touch Championships, the Mixed Touch team recorded two wins and a draw in pool play before progressing to the final against Rolleston College, which ended 8–8 at full time. After multiple player reductions and a golden point scenario, Rolleston scored to take the win.

VEX IQ Nationals
A group of 11 Year 7 students travelled to Palmerston North for the 2025 VEX IQ Nationals. Over two days of intense competition the Yellow Calipers were the highest placed St Andrew’s team, finishing 23rd nationally and second in the South Island. The Terminator team of Jack Blyde, William Keir, George Nicholls and Carter Robinson won the Inspire Award, impressing judges with the passion, positivity, and sportsmanship. Andy Kerrison, Teacher in Charge of VEX Robotics, was awarded Teacher of the Year Award in recognition for his outstanding commitment to VEX Robotics at St Andrew’s and his work supporting other schools to grow VEX IQ in Canterbury.
Volleyball
The Junior A Boys’ and Girls’ volleyball teams competed at the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Junior Volleyball Championships. The Junior Girls showed outstanding development in both skill and teamwork, winning all but one of their first six games to secure a semi-final spot. The girls ended the tournament in fourth place, with Lucy Blockley (Y10), earning a place in the Tournament Team. The Junior Boys also gave it their all, finishing 14th in Division 1. Both teams went on to compete at the South Island Secondary Schools’ Junior Volleyball Championships in Invercargill, with the girls finishing strongly in sixth place.
Water Polo
The Year 9–10 Junior Boys’ water polo team delivered an impressive performance at the South Island Cup, competing in six hard-fought matches. The team reached the bronze medal match, narrowly missing third place after a tense penalty shootout, finishing fourth overall. Louis O’Neill (Y10) was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
2026
Adventure Racing
At the Geraldine Adventure Race, the Year 9 team of Lila Gordon‑Glassford, Chloe Spencer‑Bower, George Turnbull, and Aria Register‑Hunt placed eighth overall.
Athletics
Just under 70 athletes represented the College at the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Athletics Finals securing 10 titles across track and field events. Multiple titles were won by Melenaite (Tia) Havea (Y13) in shot put and discus, and Maiyah Martin (Y10) in the 80m and 200m hurdles. Melenaite also set a meeting record in shot put with a throw of 13.78m. Other first place finishes were recorded by Amelia Cody (Y12) in the 200m hurdles, Ashton Harris (Y10) in the 3000m, Oliver Jackways (Y13) in the 200m, Alysa Brown (Y12) in the walk, Oliver Kirk (Y12) in the 110m hurdles, and Sophie Lampe (Y12) in the 1500m. Distance events produced several podium finishes, including second placings for Cohnor Walsh (Y13) in the 3000m and steeplechase, Tayla Ford (Y10) in the 1500m and 3000m, Abigail Scott Douglas (Y13) in the steeplechase, and Diesel Mackie (Y9) in the 1500m.
Basketball
Students selected for representative basketball teams include:

Canoe Polo
The Senior A canoe polo team won Division A in the Canterbury Schools’ Canoe Polo Championships defeating Shirley Boys’ High School 7–1 in the final. The Senior B team was second in Division B.
Coast to Coast
Cohnor Walsh (Y13) delivered an outstanding performance at the two‑day Individual Coast to Coast, placing third in the school category and 18th in the Open/Elite category. Others to complete the event were George Ranken and Cameron Sharpe (both Y12), alongside Oliver Barker (Y13), in the team category; Seth Vargo (Y11) who competed as part of a composite team with Darfield High School; Harry Stocker (Y11) and his mother who placed third in their category; and Science teacher Anna Hood, who completed her first individual Coast to Coast event, having previously competed four times in team events.
Cricket
The Boys’ 1st XI cricket team had an outstanding season, with an undefeated run in the Canterbury two-day competition. An outright win against St Bede’s College sealed the championship and the College’s first two‑day Canterbury title since 2017.
After defeating Timaru Boys’ High School in the quarter-final of the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Boys 1st XI Cup (Gillette Cup), the St Andrew’s 1st XI has progressed to the semi-finals to be played in Term 4. The 1st XI also secured the regional T20 competition, beating North West in the final.
The 1st XI travelled to Adelaide to compete in the annual Cricket Quad Tournament at Scotch College. The team performed well in extremely hot conditions, narrowly losing two games in the final over against strong opposition, and being the only side to challenge the host team, Scotch College. Liam Costeloe (Y13) won the award for Most Runs Scored, and the team received the Spirit of Cricket Award, presented by the umpires for demonstrating respect and playing in the right spirit.
The Year 10 Colts and Girls’ teams travelled to Wellington for the annual cricket exchange against Scots College. The Colts had a successful tour, winning the 50‑over match and both T20 games, with each decided in the final over. The Girls’ team secured a win in their second T20 and pushed all matches to close finishes.
Spencer Hair, Otis Wheeler (both Y13) and Angus Schmack (Y11) were selected as U17 Canterbury cricket representatives.
Dunedin Sports Exchange
Thirty-seven students travelled to Dunedin for the annual John McGlashan College and Columba College Summer Sports Exchange in cricket and touch. The 1st XI Boys’ cricket team won both its 50 and 25 over matches and the 1st XI Girls’ cricket team tied its second 20 over match. A notable performance was by Charlotte Schmack (Y9), who took four wickets and scored 95 runs, five short of being the first female player to have scored a century for the College.
Equestrian
Georgia Lewis (Y13) competed in the Canterbury U25 team at the New Zealand Pony Clubs Association (NZPCA) Championships, where the team placed second in New Zealand.
At the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Dressage Competition, Georgia Lewis (Y13) was named the top Level 1 Rider of the Day from a field of more than 60 riders, after placing first in both Test B and Test C. Another notable individual performer was Evie Gilmore (Y10) who was second in Test B and fourth in Test A. The StAC Navy team, comprising Everley Gilmore, Ida Roberts (both Y10), Ruby MacDonald (Y11) and Georgia Lewis (Y13) finished ninth overall out of 31 teams.
Ella Bailey (Y9) won the Canterbury Show Hunter SPH Boutique Breeding Rider in First Season Series 2025–2026.
Flag Football
Students representing the Canterbury Panthers achieved the following results at the New Zealand Junior National Flag Football Championships:
U20 Boys – Champions: Adam Beaman, William Ballin (both Y13);
U17 Boys – Champions: Alexander Ballin, Dustin Shaw (both Y12), Toby Park (Y13);
U15 Boys – 2nd: Austen Fraser (Y9), Levi Currie (Y10);
U15 Girls – 3rd: Olivia Quane (Y10).
Flying Scholarship
Max McAlister (Y12) was awarded a Ross Macpherson Scholarship at the Flying New Zealand National Awards Dinner. He received first place overall and $3000 towards flying lessons in 2026.
Futsal
At the Mainland Futsal Regional Tournament, the Girls’ team was undefeated in pool play, topping their group. They won a composed semi-final before a closely contested final which Rangiora High School won 5–2.
Gymnastics
Following performances at the 2025 National Gymnastics competition, Andre Hall (Y10) was one of two boys selected for the Gymnastics New Zealand 360 Youth Squad.
Jessica Nelson (Y4) was second in the All‑Around, first on Vault, and second on Beam at the Awesome Autumn Classic 2026, a South Island regional gymnastics competition.
Karate
Madison Forrest (Y7) achieved her first Kyu senior Brown Belt.
Kart Racing
Louis Smith (Y11) competed in the New Zealand Rotax Max Challenge in Rotorua, finishing in third place against a strong national field. He was also fifth in the New Zealand Karting Grand Prix held at KartSport Manawatu.
Polo
St Andrew’s College was well represented at the SUPA South Island Interschools Polo Tournament, where Billy Forsyth (Y12) and Sofia Sneddon (Y9), competed with Christchurch Combined White team, which won the B Grade. Sofia was also named MVP for the B Grade.
Harry Brennan (Y12), playing for Christchurch Combined Blue, finished third in B Grade, while Wilde Brabazon‑Fleming (Y11) and his combined team, Blue Springs, placed second in the A Grade following a fast‑paced and competitive match.
The senior polo team of Sofia Sneddon (Y9), Harry Brennan, and Billy Forsyth (both Y12) recorded nine goals across the day to win the B Grade at the South Island Interschools Polo Tournament.
Refereeing
Maddison Kitson (Y12) refereed in both the Girls’ and Mixed finals at the South Island Secondary Schools’ Touch Championships.
Rowing – Boat Naming
A boat‑naming ceremony was held following the arrival of a new Hudson eight and pair from Canada. The eight, named The Legacy, was funded in part through a parent‑led fundraising initiative by the Cardrona Whisky Legacy Group, established and managed by former parent, Sami Chesterton, who unveiled the name. The pair was named in honour of Old Collegian Ben Taylor (OC 2017), a recent World Rowing Champion.
Show Jumping
Grace Roy (Y11) was selected to represent New Zealand in show jumping at an international competition in Seoul, Korea.
Surf Lifesaving
Eva Willcox (Y10) competed in the 2026 Southern Regions Surf Lifesaving Championships representing South Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club, where she won a first, two seconds, and a third place in U15 and U17 Female individual and team events.
At the South Island Surf Life Saving Championships, Lucy McAlister (Y12) achieved two third placings in individual events, and five firsts and a third in team events. Oliver MacDonald (Y12) won the U17 Male ski race, and achieved three firsts and two seconds in team relay events.
Matilda Atkins (Y11), won two gold and four silver medals in tea events at the South Island IRB Championships competing with Sumner Surf Lifesaving Club.
Swimming
Kelicia Purcell (Y9) competed in 10 events at the Canterbury Regional Long Course Championships, achieving personal best times across all her races, including seven National Age Group qualifying times. She was first in 100m and 200m butterfly, second in 400m individual medley and 4×50m relay, and third in 50m butterfly, 200m breaststroke, and 200m individual medley. Kelicia also competed at the South Island Long Course Swimming Championships, where she was first in 200m butterfly, and third in the 400m individual medley in the 12–14 years age group. She made five finals and achieved four National Age Group times.
Liam Botha (Y5) competed in eight events at the 2026 Long Course Championships at Parakiore Recreation and Sports Centre in January. Highlights included an 11‑second personal best in the
200m backstroke, first place in both the Boys’ 200m individual medley and 100m breaststroke, and setting a new Canterbury record for Boys aged 9 in the 50m butterfly, which had previously stood since 2010.
Preparatory School Swimming Sports
Students showed fantastic participation, enthusiasm and school spirit in the Years 5–8 Preparatory School Swimming Sports on Monday 23 February. Year 4 students had their first experience of swimming sports at the Prelims a week earlier. Liam Botha (Y5) was a standout performer, setting four new records, with Elara Momeman (Y4) setting two records, and Otis Wafelbakker (Y7) and Bozan Wang (Y8) setting one each. MacGibbon House secured the overall House points title. Age group champions were:
Year 4: Elara Momenan, Cooper Haydon-Uren;
Year 5: Ava Blyde, Liam Botha;
Year 6: Georgia Blyde, Youzhen (Max) Chen;
Year 7: Lilly Mackie, Ethan King;

ISSA Swimming
Thirty Preparatory School students competed at the ISSA Zones Swimming Competition at Wharenui Swimming Pool, with 12 students, Ava Blyde, Liam Botha, Marcel de Wit (all Y5), Youzhen (Max) Chen, Hugo Lash (both Y6), Ethan King, Lilly Mackie, Otis Wafelbakker (all Y7), ChloeAnn Botha, Bozan Wang, Leona Smart and Jack Blyde (all Y8), qualifying for the Primary School Canterbury Swimming Championships.
Tennis
Fourteen students performed strongly in the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Year 11 and Senior Tennis Championships at Wilding Park in challenging conditions. Top results included:
George Kotepong (Y11): winner Year 11 Boys Singles;
Billie Feaver-Banks (Y11): runner-up Year 11 Girls Singles;
Connor Edmonds (Y13): runner-up Year 12/13 Boys Singles;
Marija Filipovic (Y12): winner Year 12/13 Girls Singles;
Lila Waghorn (Y13): runner-up Year 12/13 Girls Singles;
Oliver Jackways (Y13): winner Year 12/13 Consolation.
It was an all-St Andrew’s final in the Girls’ Premiership Wednesday Tennis Competition, with StAC Blue – Marija Filipovic (Y12), Lila Waghorn (Y13) and Elina Wang (Y9) beating StAC White – Zoe Kelso (Y10), Billie Feaver‑Banks and Taylor Orme (both Y11).
Touch
Marshall Coles (Y11) was selected for the Canterbury U16 Black touch team to compete at the Junior Nationals Touch Championships.
Vincent Gardiner (Y11) competed in the U16 regional touch team in the Home Grown Touch Regional Series in Hamilton in April.

Sam Wilton (Y12) and Oliver Wilton (Y11) finished second and third respectively in the 16–18 age group at the Motatapu Miners Trail, a 15km mountain run in Arrowtown.
Triathlon and Duathlon
At the South Island Secondary Schools’ Triathlon Championships, Ashton Harris (Y10) delivered a standout performance, winning the Junior Boys’ race by a margin of two minutes.
Sixteen students competed in individual and team events at the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Triathlon Championships, with Sophie Lampe (Y12) and Ashton Harris (Y10) winning age group events, and both Girls’ relay teams achieving first placings.
VEX Robotics
Five teams from St Andrew’s College competed in the VEX Robotics National Championships, with three teams progressing through to the playoff rounds. In the Middle School Division, team Error 101 – Jonathan Armstrong, Hudson Blyde, Edward Garbutt and Ethan Waines (all Y10) were narrowly beaten in the semi-finals. In the High School Division, two teams qualified in the top 16 but were knocked out in the first round. The team, Andrew J Millar Fan Club, comprising Angus Davidson, Mack Hooper, Ken Minh‑Ky Pham (all Y13) and Daisy Huang (OC 2025) won the prestigious VEX V5 Judges Award, which recognises teams demonstrating outstanding effort, perseverance, sportsmanship, interview quality, or innovative and creative engineering solutions.
Volleyball
Three St Andrew’s teams competed at the Mainland Senior Volleyball Championships, gaining valuable experience against strong South Island competition. The Senior A Girls’ team had the best result of the tournament, with a determined five-set win over St Margaret’s College in their final match securing the team fifth place.
Water Ski
Genevieve and Katrina Wallis (both Y12) represented New Zealand in water skiing at the Oz Kiwi Challenge. Both Katrina and Genevieve recorded strong individual performances in the U17 Girls’ Division. Katrina achieved silver in tricks, bronze in jump, and bronze overall, while Genevieve secured bronze in tricks, fourth in jump, and fifth overall.
