40 Years On (Class of 1986–1990)

On the weekend of 24-25 July, St Andrew's College was delighted to welcome back the Class of 1986-1990 for their 40 Years On Reunion. Thirty eight Old Collegians, along with several partners, returned to the College to reconnect, reminisce, and celebrate the friendships forged during their school years.

Guests travelled from across New Zealand, Australia, and as far afield as London, a testament to the enduring bonds shared by this group and the importance of the occasion.

The weekend began with a College tour and the Cocktail Party. Former teachers Mike Woodlock, Joe Leota, and Ian White joined the festivities and enjoyed sharing memories, stories, and perhaps a few tales that had improved with age over the past four decades.

A highlight of the reunion was Saturday evening's dinner. MC Stu North set the tone with humour and warmth, ensuring the room was filled with laughter from the outset. Guests were treated to a memorable Address to a Haggis by Ed Butler, complete with piping accompaniment, which earned a spontaneous standing ovation. Mark Rowley, Head Boy of 1990, who had travelled from London for the reunion, delivered a heartfelt Toast to Absent Friends, while Andrew Sidey gave Grace and also remembered those who had passed.

Andy McNee paid a fitting tribute to the College and the era the group shared, reflecting on school life in the 1980s and reminding everyone just how different, and very entertaining, those days were. Throughout the evening, stories flowed freely, memories resurfaced, and laughter echoed around the room as old classmates recounted some of the moments that have remained part of College folklore for 40 years.

Rector Mark Wilson reflected on the many changes the College has seen since this group graduated in 1990, while Julian McCully and Gavin Treadgold led a spirited rendition of the College Song, enthusiastically joined by their fellow Old Collegians.

While much has changed at St Andrew's over the past four decades, the weekend was a reminder that some things remain constant. The friendships formed at school, the shared experiences, and the sense of belonging to the College community continue to endure long after students leave the gates.

We are grateful to everyone who travelled near and far to be part of such an enjoyable and memorable weekend. The camaraderie and connection shared by this lively group were evident throughout the reunion, and we look forward to welcoming them back to St Andrew's College in 2036.
