Basketball is an incredibly popular team sport at St Andrew’s, and is the largest sport in terms of participation at the College. It is open to all students from Years 9–13 and is also available in the Preparatory School.

Basketball is played in the winter season, which normally begins after the April school holidays. Our Senior Boys’ and Girls’ A teams play in the Thompson/Whelan Trophy competition on Tuesday nights, with the Boys’ A team and Boys’ U17 team also playing in the Christchurch Saturday competition, if numbers allow.

The remaining teams play in the Friday night graded competition. A number of our students get a team together with friends to enter a more social grade in this competition. Games take place at various venues in Christchurch.

Our Senior Boys’ and Girls’ A teams attend the South Island Secondary Schools tournament in winter tournament week, which gives them the opportunity to qualify for the Nationals. There are several exchanges with other schools during the season, and our Year 9 and 10 teams sometimes compete in smaller tournaments.

Students who excel at basketball have opportunities to study and play overseas, as scouts from several USA universities attend the main tournaments.

We have two fantastic gymnasiums, which cater for basketball over the winter season. Our basketball teams have dedicated, skilled coaches, with further support provided by teachers and staff.

Our basketball players enjoyed a strong season in 2019, with the Senior Boys' finishing as runners-up at the South Island Secondary Schools' Tournament.
