The Senior School Curriculum

The Senior School curriculum at St Andrew’s College supports Year 12–13 students as they deepen their learning, make more purposeful subject choices, and prepare for life beyond school. Students are encouraged to pursue academic excellence, take increasing ownership of their progress, and develop the confidence, discipline, and independence needed for their next steps
A curriculum for choice and direction
The Senior School curriculum is designed to provide a wide range of options, allowing students to follow a chosen pathway of study while keeping future opportunities open. A high level of academic achievement gives students greater choice beyond school, whether they move into tertiary study, training, work, or other pathways.
At this stage, learning becomes more specialised and self-directed. Students are supported to make thoughtful decisions about their subjects, understand the demands of NCEA, and build the habits required for success in their final years at the College.
Deepening learning in Years 12–13
The major aims for learning in the Senior School are to deepen understanding and prepare students for their next step in life. Students are expected to think critically, manage their learning, engage with feedback, and take greater responsibility for their academic progress.
Key Competencies remain woven through curriculum content and learning experiences, helping students manage themselves, think carefully, communicate effectively, relate well to others, and participate and contribute with confidence.
Curriculum core and option subjects
NCEA at St Andrew's
The National Certificate of Educational Achievement, NCEA, is New Zealand’s national qualification for Secondary School students. It offers a broad and flexible framework that challenges students, including those who are highly able and motivated.
At St Andrew’s, NCEA students consistently perform well above national averages. NCEA learning focuses on inquiry, critical thinking, problem-solving, and processing information, supporting students to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable beyond school.
