Olivia Brett (OC 2019), winner of The Maginness Cup for Excellence in Sport

On Friday 8 August, over 140 members of the St Andrew’s College Old Collegians community gathered for an evening of connection, celebration, and storytelling at the 2025 Old Collegians Annual Dinner. Spanning alumni from 1945 to 2024, the event was a testament to the enduring spirit of the College and the remarkable achievements of its alumni.

Olivia Brett (2015–2019), The Maginness Cup for Excellence in Sport
Olivia was recognised for her extraordinary Gold medal win in the Women’s K4 at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Her journey from student to Olympian is a story of perseverance, humility, and resilience. Though she flew under the radar during her school years, Olivia’s success is a reminder that greatness often flourishes quietly. She brought her Gold medal to share with guests and spoke candidly about her path to the Olympics after leaving St Andrew’s.

Rick’s award-winning documentary Maurice and I has earned widespread acclaim, honouring the legacy of Sir Miles Warren and Maurice Mahoney while showcasing Rick’s own creative brilliance. Steph Bain (OC 1992) reflected on Rick’s rich involvement in cultural life during his time at the College, making his career trajectory no surprise. This award celebrates Rick’s contribution to New Zealand’s cultural landscape and his enduring connection to St Andrew’s.

Scrump was honoured for 26 years of outstanding service to the College, as Custodian, sports manager, coach, mentor, and friend. His kindness and commitment have shaped the experiences of countless students, staff, and Old Collegians. Mikae Tuu’u (OC 2003) delivered a heartfelt introduction, and Kelvin McMillan (OC 1977) presented Scrump with a beautiful portrait, which he accepted with characteristic humility. Among those attending was Mayor Phil Mauger (OC 1975), who joined many others in celebrating Scrump’s remarkable dedication.

The evening was filled with laughter, heartfelt speeches, and a shared sense of pride in the achievements of our alumni. The night concluded with a rousing rendition of the College Song, led by Steph Bain, Courtenay Washington (OC 1995), and Chris Adams (OC 1996). Special thanks to Tom Johnston (OC 2003), Hamish De Pass (OC 1974), and Dennis De Pass (OC 1970) for assisting Noah Fanene (Year 13) and Piper Charlie Gregg (Year 10) in another memorable Address to a Haggis. We also thank MC Tomo Yee (OC 2008), OCA President Sam Crosbie (OC 2009), and of course Russell Gray and the catering team.

We extend our warmest congratulations to this year’s award recipients and thank everyone who joined us to celebrate the legacy and future of our Old Collegians.
