Statement Regarding the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care

The Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care in state and faith-based institutions between 1950 and 1999 is now underway in New Zealand.  The Inquiry has generated significant public interest and media attention in recent weeks. The Commission will continue until 2023 and will involve a number of private and public hearings. The Terms of Reference for the Royal Commission are broad, and include schools.

The St Andrew’s College Board of Governors supports the Inquiry.  The Board is keeping a watching brief on the Royal Commission as it progresses and will consider any future recommendations that are relevant to our school. As we fall within the Terms of Reference, there is a possibility that St Andrew’s College will have involvement in the Royal Commission. We will co-operate fully, if asked to do so.

As the Inquiry progresses, it is possible that historic allegations involving the College may arise. Reflecting our values of truth, faith, and inclusivity, any approach to the College will be heard respectfully and considered carefully. 

The Board recently ratified an Historic Abuse Policy to guide our response to any such approaches. We are working with advice from ISNZ (Independent Schools of New Zealand) and legal representation to ensure we are prepared, should the need arise.
