Sport coaching with our ‘Balance is Better at StAC’ philosophy
22 July 2025

Over the past few years, our Sport Department has embraced the Sport New Zealand (Sport NZ) philosophy, Balance is Better, as a foundation for the College’s sport programmes. But what does this mean for our coaches, athletes, and parents?
A recent article from Sport NZ outlines key principles and practical ways to apply this approach. At its heart, Balance is Better is about prioritising long-term development, well-being, and creating positive sporting experiences for all young people – regardless of their skill level or aspirations.
Here are 10 key coaching principles that reflect this philosophy, and ones we are endeavouring to encourage at St Andrew's College:
Redefine Success – Winning isn’t everything. True success includes growth, joy, and meaningful connections.
Coach the Person, Not Just the Sport – Focus on developing the whole individual, not just their athletic performance.
Foster Self-Leadership – Help young athletes take ownership of their journey and decisions.
Put Athletes First – Listen, understand, and support each athlete’s unique needs.
Celebrate Individuality – Every athlete is different. Inclusion begins with understanding and adapting to those differences.
Build Belonging – Young people thrive when they feel capable, in control, and part of something bigger.
Embrace the Learning Process – Mistakes are not failures – they’re essential steps toward growth.
Create Safe and Enjoyable Environments – A positive space is key to development and retention.
Encourage Balance – Focus on long-term development that supports lifelong health and activity.
Partner with Parents – Open, honest communication strengthens the support system around young athletes. When coaches and parents work together, our rangatahi flourish and communities grow stronger.
By adopting these principles, we’re not just coaching for today – we’re building a better future for our young athletes.
