PERMA-V

PERMA-V: Te anga toiora

PERMA-V is the St Andrew’s College framework for well-being. Based on the PERMA model introduced by Professor Martin Seligman (2011) and expanded with the addition of Vitality by Emiliya Zhivotovskaya, PERMA-V recognises the five original building blocks of human flourishing alongside the essential role of physical vitality. In this model, well-being is understood as being more than positive emotions or happiness alone. This framework underpins our Positive Education philosophy.

Positive Emotions - Ngā kare ā-roto ora

Positive emotions are about noticing and cultivating feelings like joy, gratitude, hope, and calm. It doesn’t mean being happy all the time – it means recognising what’s good, even in small moments, and using those emotions to build strength and perspective.

Engagement - Te urupare hinengaro

Engagement is the feeling of being deeply involved in something that matters. It happens when we use our strengths, follow our curiosity, and are challenged just enough to grow. This state is often called flow – when time disappears and we feel completely absorbed in the moment.

Relationships - Whanaungatanga

Relationships are about feeling seen, supported, and valued. As social beings, we are wired for connection. Relationships provide love, belonging, and shared experiences that amplify well-being.

Meaning - Te pūtake

Meaning is the sense that your life, and your actions, matter. It comes from connecting to something bigger than yourself through purpose, values, service, and identity. This also includes recognising the inherent worth of every person and the call to serve others, a core part of our Christian tradition. We experience meaning when we know what’s important to us and how we can contribute.

Accomplishment - Te angitū

Accomplishment is about pursuing success, mastery, and achievement for its own sake, not just for external rewards. The joy of accomplishment comes from the process and the sense of growth. It’s the satisfaction of setting goals, working toward them, and recognising how far you’ve come – step by step.

Vitality - Te mauri

Vitality is the energy and strength that comes from caring for your body and mind. It’s about feeling energised, balanced, and ready to engage with life. Vitality includes movement, exercise, nutritious food, sleep, rest, and balanced use of technology – all of which help us feel our best and bring energy to our day.
