Music and the Curriculum

music diagram

At St Andrew’s College you can select Music as a subject from Year 9. We have a highly regarded music programme that allows students to develop skills in arranging, composition, theory and performance.

At senior levels, students can specialise their programme to meet their unique musical strengths and interests. We have a strong emphasis on performance and composition and regularly run masterclasses for our students. NCEA/senior levels learn in project-based learning.

St Andrew’s is one of the first schools in the country to implement a full music technology component into its curriculum. This is particularly important for students wishing to work in the modern music industry.

We have a leading scholarship music programme. Students regularly gain NCEA Music scholarships.

FIVE reasons to get involved

  1. Music groups for all genres including choral, jazz, orchestra, chamber groups, barbershop and rock.
  2. Specialist instrumental and vocal tutors in all styles of music.
  3. A professional, world class technology and recording suite and programme led by Duncan Ferguson, recognised as one of New Zealand’s top music technology educators.
  4. Professional, highly maintained quality equipment and resources.
  5. Regular trips away to competitions and festivals both in New Zealand and overseas.

In addition to our music programme:

  • we compete at both regional and national competitions;
  • we have regular trips away for each music group;
  • we hold performance evenings each term;
  • music events such as Jazz Club and Winter Festival.
